Top 4 snack recipes for your next big adventure (that the kids will absolutely LOVE)
We all know the most exciting part about the big road trip is usually the snacks that come along with it. Whether you’re out for a weekend away or doing months-long trips from coast to coast, we over here at ORCA know how important it is to keep everyone’s bellies happy and full while out on the road. That’s why we’ve put together our top 4 snack recipes for you to try on your next big adventure!
All of these recipes can be prepared either at home or in any one of our ORCA trailers or our Hybrid caravans!
DATE BALLS
We LOVE a good, creamy, nutty date ball! To start, we’ll need 3 ingredients:
10-12 fresh dates
1 lean handful of fresh pecan nuts
All the coconut that makes your heart happy
This is one of our favourite recipes from The Feel Good Foodie whose method is just as easy as the ingredients suggest. Simply pitt your dates, soak them for a few hours and once they’re all nice and soft, blend your dates and pecan nuts together. Place the paste into a bowl or plate and start scooping up your date balls to be rolled in your hands. Once you’re happy with the size and shape, generously roll it through coconut shavings - and you’re done! Chill it, eat it, store it, these are delicious and are easy on-the-go snacks high in fibre and healthy sugars!
PROTEIN BALLS
“No food processor needed” is the ultimate dream while out on the road! That’s why these protein balls are a big winner for us. We love easy, no-bake anything, so trust us when we say that these protein balls are absolutely mind-blowingly delicious! Eating Bird Food blog has put together different variations and combinations for this quick and easy recipe, but our favourite has got to be the chocolate peanut butter. All you need is the following:
1 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup natural peanut butter
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
2 scoops, about 50-60 grams chocolate protein powder
2 Tablespoons chocolate chips
The method? Place the oats, peanut butter, honey, protein powder and chocolate chips in a large bowl and stir together to combine. It might take a while to combine but keep going, you’ve got this! Once combined, use a small cookie scoop (or little human hands) to scoop and form the dough into balls. Store in a covered container in the fridge or freezer. And ta-da!
GRANOLA BARS
Cookie + Kate has come up with the ultimate no-bake granola bars and we are obsessed! This recipe calls for complete ownership from you to choose what textures, flavours and sweeteners you love most. With plentiful mix-in options, this recipe can be tailored to suit your family’s taste buds entirely. But for the base of this recipe, choose everything as you wish! And the method is even easier than picking your ingredients. take your grains and nuts, as much as you wish, including the fruit pieces your kids love so much, blitz them in the food processor, lay them out on a baking tray, press them down ever-so-firmly and then let your granola bar set in the fridge. Cut them up and enjoy your yummy, healthy squares!
CHO-COCO’S
These yummy chocolate coconut balls, or as we like to call them, CHO-COCO’S, are a big winner in any chocolate-loving household! With an easy recipe, we’re sure the kids will love to make these themselves (all while licking the spoons as they go!). All you need is the following (as told by iFood):
Coconut oil: no substitutions or the mixture won’t solidify.
Cacao or cocoa powder: whichever floats your boat.
Vanilla extract and maple syrup or honey: sweeteners are all up to you.
Oats: Quick, rolled or quick cooking steel cut oats. Gluten free if needed.
Coconut flakes: because they’re yummy
The method is as follows:
Melt coconut oil in a medium saucepan on low heat. Once melted, remove from heat. Combine the ingredients - First, mix in the cacao powder and vanilla into the coconut oil. Next, whisk in the maple syrup/honey. Finally, stir in the coconut flakes and oats until well combined. Then, freeze the mixture for just 10 minutes in the freezer! If using refrigerated maple syrup, the chocolate mixture will harden while mixing. You might not need to place it in a freezer before rolling. Also honey might require extra time whisking as it is quite solid. Roll your balls - Use a small scoop and form the balls. Place the balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Then pop the baking sheet back into the freezer for another 30 minutes. And that’s it!
